What sort of bike?

This ride weve been doing for several years is perfect for riders of all sorts, all abilities. It wont suit someone whos a week into their cycling year, but its great if youre training for the Barmy, or just want to dip your toes in club riding. Someone who is really keen can do this ride at racing speed. Someone who hates hill climbing will be frustrated by it - but theyll still probably enjoy themselves.

In fact, theres nothing not to like about Aire Valley , Mad About Brighton (madaboutbrighton.co.uk). Ok, so what sort of bike?. Anything. You can do it on a folding bike (we did it on a Brompton, albeit a touring Bike Friday rather than a commuting Brompton). Youll see dozens of road bikes out on the lanes. Your commuter hybrid is fine too. Theres two short unpaved sections: if youre on skinny tyres, you can divert round them or simply push.

In two days we manage just over 100km, from Exeter to Plymouth. (Kev in the lead taking advantage of his years of experience on urban bikes does 20 a day. The unpaved stretches included. ) No one cares what youre riding: its a pretty friendly bunch out on the lanes. Ive ridden the route three times so far and twice with a Brompton folded up. It was also my subject for a feature article in BikeBiz magazine, entitled Putting the Brompton to the test.

How much traffic is there?

The M25 is an oval of motorway that encircles much of London. If you have a weekend free you can drive around it, making one very long and tedious circuit of about 375 miles. I did this once and counted over 200 continuous miles in slow moving queues at the busiest bit. You will experience traffic delays on this ride as well. With only a few exceptions, roads are not designed to handle the amount of traffic they get in towns or suburbs, so even if theres no other vehicle on the road, youll be delayed due to junctions, pedestrians and buses stopping for passengers, cyclists, cars trying to park (theres always someone who doesnt understand park in laybys), parked cars blocking your way and trundling.

There's also the issue of speed. Roadsigns are for speeds under 30, but on the A3 south west of London, you can safely do 80mph on a run after every junction. Country lanes aren't like that at all, they don't feel like roads, they feel like hints. Here's a place where a road might go if it wanted to go somewhere else. Astonishingly the country lane above has motorway-style reflective distance signing every 50 metres, not because its street lights don't work but because a poor-sighted driver is likely to end up in the hedge instead of hitting them.

How much traffic is there? This part of England is densely populated, not least by people with fast Audis, so you wont get the solitude youd enjoy in mid-Wales or the Pennines. There are plenty of quiet lanes, but you occasionally have to use busy roads to connect them up. The busiest section is of course South London, where any really quiet route would be unbearably indirect. Are you planning a cycling holiday in England? I had the good fortune to spend a month touring the country by bike in 2010, and it has easily become one of my favorite trips.

Here are some of my observations. England is not as flat as Holland, but there are surprisingly few steep hills. Most of the landscape is low-lying and gently rolling. So how much traffic would you like to encounter? In a recent survey I asked cyclists to estimate the volume of traffic they had encountered over an audax distance, and here are the results. Note that the numbers add up to more than 100 because some cyclists encountered a wide range of traffic volumes:.

Is the route signposted?

Is the route signposted?. No. There are countless different routes from London to Brighton. Broadly speaking, they can be divided into west of the M23/A23 and east of it; weve chosen an easterly route, which is closer to the British Heart Foundations classic ride but uses quieter roads. Dont get hung up about the exact route because while we do recommend using a map, were also pretty confident that you can plot your way to Brighton, even if its just by following the signs for London.

With this in mind, weve tried to keep the route as non-specific as possible. There are countless different routes from London to Brighton. Broadly speaking, they can be divided into west of the M23/A23 and east of it; weve chosen an easterly route, which is closer to the British Heart Foundations classic ride but uses quieter roads. This isnt a route youre likely to have tried before, so lets get some navigation out of the way.

Our route begins in Purley as well as ends there, too: head north on London Road, then west on Station Approach and south on West Lane. if you can find a quiet lane on a busy road, or a busy road on a quiet lane, by all means use it. But dont try to make your route pass directly through the quieter parts of South London . It is approximately 505 miles.

How do I get back?

I like this method for getting back. Its 40 minutes in the same place you started so its easy to find where to put your bike after you arrive.  It involves 1 change, all at very convenient stations. Theres usually a cycle hire place at these stations which is handy if you want to hire a bike and cycle into London / Brighton but honestly its not necessary. It’s not always possible to get your bike in the train, especially if you’re at a station with fewer spaces.

It is generally the case that if you miss your train (or it’s sold out) you can walk to the next one and take your bike on that – but there is further information available here . I normally take a bike on trains without reservation, and have never had problems. Once I had to ask permission from the guard at the last minute. Other times I've just not bothered - it's up to you.

No matter what your passenger type is, we have a ticket that will suit. Choose from our different options below and please remember to contact us with any questions or comments you may have. All of our passengers are unique but some like to have special travel requirements.

Our PNR system allows you to see this information before confirming and to modify it if need be. Adult (16-59) and Senior (60+)

We often find that our customers over 60 enjoy the convenience of being able to plan their travel in advance and therefore wish to purchase their tickets in advance. This is why we have introduced a Senior discounted single ticket fare which is available for people aged 60 years and above. Senior citizens are entitled to this discounted fare on production of any valid form of personal identification. There are, however, exceptions to the above fare which you can read about below.

. Senior fares apply to anyone aged 60 or over on Day 1 of their journey. These fares are available at all times after 09:30 on Day 2 and for the whole of that day. If you are aged 60 or over, you can enjoy a discount on your single bus fare. You qualify for this discount once you have purchased one full price Adult ticket, i. e.

all tickets must be paid for at the full price (with the exception of Gift Vouchers). Adult fares apply to all customers from the age of 16 upwards. Proof of eligibility will be required if requested. Seniors fares apply to all customers from the age of 60 upwards.  Proof of eligibility will be required if requested. Age is used to offer cheaper fares, so some very young children may pay adult fares. For an infant (under 2 years old) to travel, they must be accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.

Infants (0-2)

A ticket is required for each infant; the infant’s fare will be collected during the boarding process. Please be aware that infants without a ticket are not allowed to travel on ScotRail services. Infant discount is available on trains and journeys within Scotland, except for Caledonian Sleeper services, which do not take booked or advanced tickets. Infants under 2 years of age may travel free of charge in their carrier, unless an extra seat is requested and paid for in advance.

Passengers traveling with infants are advised to deposit the child's name on the space provided on the boarding pass, as airlines may enforce age restrictions strictly. An infant is defined as a human being who has not attained his/her second birthday by the date of commencement of travel. A lap child is not counted as occupying a seat. If you have an infant with you who infrequently travel by plane, here are some tips on preparing your baby to travel by plane:.

Children (3-15)

To avoid the possibility of your child being left behind at a port, be sure to inform the agent handling the sailing arrangements that your child will be traveling alone. They will then make special arrangements for the child's departure and arrival in the port where you are disembarking or embarking. You must present yourself at the port's Immigration office as soon as you arrive and again when you depart. Failure to do so will result in loss of any advance gratuities, travel insurance reimbursement, and availability of future prepaid cruises with Carnival.

Children under 14 can only travel alone under the following circumstances: "In special cases, the carrier may transport a child under 14 unaccompanied if the child and his or her parents (or guardian) have signed a consent form authorizing the trip. This statement must include information on how to contact the parents. The consent form must be provided by the carrier or its agent. ". Children under the age of 12 years can travel free on all public transport in Denmark.

Children over the age have to pay adult fare. If you are travelling with three or more children, you may be entitled to a discount on the price of the family ticket or Free Public Transport (similar to Oslo. We can arrange escort for children between 3 and 15 years old. Extra charges apply, please contact us for info. Two infants under the age of 2 may travel with one adult with a valid ticket; each infant will require their own seat (except on flights to/from USA where this does not apply).

Booster seats

When I check in online at Bus Eireann, I can only select one passenger's name for my comfort fit seat belt request, this works fine, but does not take into account other passengers who may also need them, this information is not forwarded to the driver. My daughter has recently (Oct 2015) had her leg amputated below the knee, this makes it hard to use a standard seatbelt. So far we have had two occasions where the driver could not supply a seatbelt for my daughter to use.

With effect from 1st Jan 2017 the law changed regarding teenagers using booster seats etc. , in their cars. It should now be easier to obtain on board a Bus Eireann coach. There is no age limit imposed on children wearing. If you have a child aged up to approximately 11 years who has not yet outgrown the booster seat stage, they may use a booster seat on board our services, provided we are notified at the time of booking and it is safe to do so.

You may already know that your child can travel on our coaches if they’re less than 150 cm tall or they are aged between 4 and 11 years, but did you know that they can use a booster seat during their journey too?. Booster seats are available on our Coaches at no additional cost. There is a limited amount of seats for this type of seat so please let us know at the time of booking if you need one.

Adult (26 - 59)

We originally designed the Extra Legroom Seats to serve passengers aged between of 60 and above. At that time, the 60-year-old mark seemed like a reasonable threshold. However, we’ve since found that passengers below the age of 60 may in fact also need additional space for their legs. This enables them to travel more comfortably on board our aircraft. The Adult fare is applicable to all passengers aged between 26 and 59 inclusive. It is one of the most price-friendly fares for adult carriers.

Child (16 - 25).  Child fares apply to all passengers between the ages of 16 and 25 inclusive. Adult fares apply to all passengers aged 26-59 years. Booster seat: All children between 125 cm and 150 cm AND under 14 years of age must use an approved booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Two infants traveling with the same adult get to travel for free. Senior fares apply to all customers from the age of 60 upwards.

Child 0 - 12 inclusive

Children aged 12 or younger must be accompanied to travel on any European train service by an adult aged 18 or older. The ticket used for a child accompanied by an adult can be booked together with the reservation of the accompanying adult (on the same PNR). Child fares apply to children over the age of 12 years as at 1st January in the year of travel and younger than 15 years, 2 months. Children under 4 years will not be charged if they do not take a seat.

All children aged three and above must have their own seat, if possible on an adult’s lap. If this is not possible, use of an infant seat is required. There are various age requirements for children to travel alone or with just one parent. For trips within Europe, the following general rules apply:. Au Pair child fares are only available for children aged 12 or under. 12 – 18 year olds can travel with a Child Railcard.

Young persons (13 - 25)

There are special fares for young persons between the ages of 13 and 25 inclusive. The adult fare applies if you are accompanied by an adult during your trip or use an InterRail Global Pass, 1st Class pass or 2nd Class European Youth pass without an adult. If you travel on your own or with a companion of the same age (who does not have an "adult” pass), then you may use a discounted Child Pass.

A person of 16 or 17 years old may wish to undertake a journey unattended. A person of that age who wishes to travel alone - without the accompaniment of another adult - can do so on many European rail services, however some routes require the person to be 18 years or older.  To find out more about young person fares click here (external link). The Tca Network has a history of providing affordable group travel for young persons aged 13-25.

Groups with a ratio of more than 8 full fare paying adults to every one under 18 are considered "youth groups" and will receive additional discounts on the standard fares along with many other privileges. No unaccompanied children under 16 years of age will be accepted for carriage unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over holding a signed statement from both parents/legal guardians authorising the proposed trip. The young persons'(Y) ticket is available as a supplement for all Eurostar services from London St Pancras to Brussels, Lille or Paris and Rotterdam.

Senior (60 and over)

This reduction is applied automatically on our online booking system when at least one valid senior/carer person is added to your group. Where the online booking system does not apply automatic defined passenger discounts, confirmation that this discount has been applied will be given upon receipt by Go-Sat.

Adults 2+

On 26 March 2018, new regulations will come into effect impacting travellers to the UK who are under 18. By travelling on a discounted fare (also known as an "adult" or "Y" fare), the passenger will be required to prove that they have consent from their parent or guardian to travel alone. A passport is one form of acceptable proof of this, but there are other forms of accepted proof depending on the circumstances. Adults 2+ is the new initiative from Virgin Trains which enables children aged between 5-15 years old to travel on our network within certain restrictions.

This page provides you with all the information you will need, whether you are planning your trip, or about to go travelling with your family. Adult fares are applicable to all passengers aged 2+.
